Fluoride and Your Drinking Water: What Do You Think?

In the June issue of Costco Connection, readers were asked to vote on whether they thought community drinking water should be fluoridated. Sixty-five percent of readers voted “yes” in favor of fluoridation. This reinforces what the ADA (American Dental Association) and the American Association of Orthodontics has said for nearly 70 years, that community water fluoridation plays a major role in improving the public’s oral health.

Using fluoride toothpaste after each meal is one of the most proven ways to help you stay cavity free. Fluoride makes teeth more resistant to the acids produced after eating or drinking and replaces minerals that are lost in the early stages of tooth decay. Fluoride is recommended for all ages.

Office Announcements and News – August 2011

MariaCongratulations to Maria, our wonderful chairside assistant, who celebrated her birthday on the 9th of August. Maria’s history with our office is an amazing one! Maria was hired by Dr. White and joined the office on November 1, 1988! At that time, Maria worked full-time handling the front and back office in her usual detailed way! Once Maria’s family started to grow, she scaled back to part-time work at our office, and then ultimately worked as a substitute chairside assistant when one of our team members was sick.

Nowadays, you will see Maria’s smile in the office on a more regular basis since she works a defined schedule again! We are so happy to be working side-by-side with her and wish Maria the happiest of birthdays!

TheresaHappy Anniversary, Theresa! August 15, 2006 was the first day of employment for Theresa…we have felt so fortunate ever since! Recommended Fluoridation Levels Revisited…

The Health and Human Services Department has announced it is recalibrating the recommended ratio of fluoride to water that is considered optimal for fluoridating community water systems.

The new recommendation for optimally fluoridated water is 0.7 parts per million, compared to the previous level of 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million. The adjustment will provide an effective level of fluoride to reduce the incidence of tooth decay, while minimizing the rate of fluorosis in the general population.

In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency is initiating a review of the maximum allowable level of fluoride in drinking water, which is currently 4 parts per million. In California, current regulations put the maximum allowable level of fluoride at 2 parts per million.

While the action may prompt questions, dentists can reassure patients that the government is stressing that water fluoridation is a very safe and effective way to prevent dental disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has more information on the announcement.
