Why Your Child Should Visit an Orthodontist by Age 8

Impacted TeethPanoramic radiographs and a visit to one of Orange County’s leading orthodontists, Dr. Chris Zachary, are a powerful combination for preventing larger problems later in your child’s life.

Recently, the California Dental Association cited an article published in the July 2012 issue of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In a retrospective study of 384 cases, the take-home message was that a clinical exam, coupled with a panoramic radiograph, is a predictable and reliable way of detecting impacted canine teeth. If detected early, orthodontic treatment can improve and/or correct the impactions.

Treatment of impacted canine teeth can “frequently require surgical intervention, which can involve substantial complications” if not detected until the patient becomes a young adult or beyond. This study further strengthens the importance of seeing an orthodontist early. We recommend doing so by age 8. No special referral is required.
